Biometric targeting Thoroughbred triumph

Biometric (left) winning the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot, will head for the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood on Friday

Ralph Beckett hopes Biometric can continue his progression when pitched into Pattern-race company for the first time in the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood on Friday.

The son of Bated Breath will step up to Group Three company in the mile contest after connections decided to bypass an outing in a Listed event at Newmarket earlier this month.

Having had his unbeaten record ended at Lingfield on his penultimate start, the Khalid Abdullah-owned three-year-old returned to winning ways with victory in the Britannia Stakes on his latest start at Royal Ascot.

Beckett said: “Biometric will run in the Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood, which is a Group Three. Newmarket was just a fortnight too soon for him.

“This fitted much better for him in terms of timing. He has been busy for an inexperienced horse, having four starts in quick succession.

“It is a good spot for him and hopefully he will run well.”

A drop in class could be in store for stablemate Manuela De Vega after she followed up her fourth in the Oaks at Epsom when finishing one place further back in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh.

Beckett said: “She came out of the race very well, which is indicative of how little she was asked to do.

“We were tracking the pace and stuck down on the fence and we couldn’t do much about it. She ran well without running quite as well as she is able to, I suspect.

“I’ve got to work out what to do next and whether to drop down in grade or what, I’m not entirely sure.”
