Whip ban rules ‘disappointed’ Atzeni out of Guineas meeting

A whip ban proved costly for Andrea Atzeni at Newmarket

Andrea Atzeni is set to miss next month’s Qipco 1000 and 2000 Guineas after picking up a six-day whip ban at Newmarket on Thursday.

The 28-year-old – who could have potentially ridden 1000 Guineas favourite Qabala – was given the ban, which runs between May 2 and 7, following his ride aboard the Alan King-trained Beringer in the Coates & Seely Brut Reserve Handicap.

Stewards at the track deemed the Classic-winning jockey to have used his whip in the incorrect place aboard the four-year-old on the run to the line in the mile contest, an offence which carries a ban ranging from two to six days.

Atzeni said: “Obviously I am disappointed and I don’t want to miss the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, but rules are rules.

“I am sure we would have had something in the 2000 Guineas as well as the 1000 Guineas, and UAE Jewel was a possible runner that weekend as well.

“I need to speak to my legal team to see if it is worth appealing or not, and see what is best to do. It is hard to say much more.”
