Balding sets French Guineas target for Bye Bye Hong Kong

Bye Bye Hong Kong and Silvestre de Sousa return

Andrew Balding is leaning towards sending Bye Bye Hong Kong on his travels after earmarking the French 2000 Guineas as his next target.

The Kingsclere handler is favouring an outing in the French Classic for the son of Street Sense, following his victory in a Kentucky Derby trial at Chelmsford on Thursday.

Balding said: “He has come out of the race well. Silvestre (de Sousa) was adamant we should stick to the mile and I’m in full agreement. We will probably go for the French Guineas with him.

“It was a nice trial and he deserves a chance in a race like that.”

A tilt at the Homeserve Dee Stakes is next on the agenda for stablemate and Doncaster winner Bangkok.

Balding said: “I think Bangkok is a pretty smart horse. I think we will go for the Dee Stakes and take it from there.”

Balding admits he may face a race against time in getting Bell Rock ready for next month’s Qipco 2000 Guineas, after the son of Kingman suffered a recent problem.

He said: “He has had a little bit of a setback, which is a shame as his work had been very good. He is back in work now and we will have to see how his work is closer to the Guineas.

“It is a possibility that he could make it, but no decision has been made yet.”
