Rendlesham possibility for Bristol De Mai before Gold Cup

Bristol De Mai on his way to victory in the Betfair Chase at Haydock

Nigel Twiston-Davies is considering giving multiple Grade One winner Bristol De Mai a run in the Betfred Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock on February 16.

The eight-year-old could take in the extended three-mile Grade Two contest after falling on his last start, in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day.

The Simon Munir- and Isaac Souede-owned gelding has a tremendous record at Haydock, winning on each of his four visits to the Merseyside venue, including the last two renewals of the Betfair Chase.

Twiston-Davies said: “He is great. He was a bit bruised afterwards, but he was not too bad and is cantering away now. Hopefully it is onwards and upwards.

“We are in discussion, but he could possibly go to Haydock and we might think about running him over hurdles to give him a confidence booster in the Rendlesham Hurdle, then on to the Gold Cup.

“Cheltenham Trials Day probably comes a bit too quick, then you have the Denman (at Newbury) and you are taking on those that could be in the Gold Cup.

“I’ve not really thought of the Irish Gold Cup, as he would not be the best traveller overnight.”
