Paul Nolan sets sights on Drinmore date for Discorama

Paul Nolan would not be afraid to throw Discorama into Grade One company for the baroneracing.com Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse on December 2.

The five-year-old made a near faultless chasing debut at Naas at the weekend, looking a complete natural over the larger obstacles as he triumphed by a length and a quarter.

Discorama was a useful hurdler too, finishing second to Blow By Blow in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ event at the Cheltenham Festival, and Nolan has high hopes over fences now.

“We always thought he was a chaser in the making which was why we wasted no time with him over hurdles,” said Nolan.

“He just jumped his hurdles a bit big which could cost you half a length, he was also high enough in the weights so we thought we’d go straight over fences.

“Our plan was always to run in Naas and if it went well to then go for the Drinmore. It went well so I see no reason to change tack.

“You could go for a winners-of-one and still bump into a 150-rated hurdler, so we may as well go for a Grade One.

“He looked good at the weekend and hopefully he’s a nice horse in the making.”

Nolan is no stranger to big-race success with the likes of Accordion Etoile, Shinrock Paddy and Joncol winning at the highest level for him, but his last Grade One winner was Defy Logic nearly five years ago.

Recent seasons have been quiet for the County Wexford handler but he has begun this season in decent form.

“The horses are going well, even those that aren’t winning are generally going close. Long may it continue,” said Nolan.
