Charlie Appleby has Dubai Carnival in mind for First Contact

First Contact wins under James Doyle at Newmarket

Charlie Appleby already has his sights set on next year’s Dubai Carnival with First Contact following his two-and-a-half-length victory under James Doyle in the bet365 Mile at Newmarket.

The Newmarket handler said of the 4-1 winner: “He was slow from the gate in the Britannia and just got out of his ground.

“William (Buick) said after that he was running with the choke out. We felt there would be no pace today and I said to William just to pop out and keep it simple.

“He could make up into a Dubai Carnival horse. We’ve been thinking about it for six weeks or so.”

Poetic Charm (7-2) was another to bounce back from a Royal Ascot no-show when leaving her tame effort in the Sandringham behind to complete a treble for Appleby and double for Doyle when taking the Spa At Bedford Lodge Hotel British EBF Fillies’ Handicap by three quarters of a length.

Appleby, who also won the Superlative Stakes with Quorto, said: “I purposely didn’t run her in the spring to hold on to her mark for the Sandringham. This filly probably needed it Ascot and she has definitely come forward since Ascot.

“Going forward James said seven furlongs is her trip. She is probably ready to start looking at a little bit of black type.”

Drill could form part of trainer Luca Cumani’s team for this year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival after resuming his progression with a two-and-a-quarter-length success in the Saeed Suhail Saeed Handicap.

Cumani said of the 7-4 winner: “He lost a shoe at the start at Salisbury. When he came there he didn’t let himself down on fast ground minus a shoe. He came back with a really sore foot. It took a while to get back right again.

“He could easily be one for the mile-and-a-half handicap at Goodwood.”
