Karl Burke sets sights on Yorkshire Oaks for Laurens

Laurens won her third Group One at the weekend

Karl Burke’s Prix de Diane heroine Laurens is likely to skip the Irish Oaks in favour of the Darley Yorkshire Oaks on August 23.

The gutsy filly delivered a first Classic victory for the Leyburn-based handler, holding off Musis Amica by a neck in a thrilling finish.

Burke was giving serious consideration to a trip to the Curragh immediately after the race, but has now indicated Laurens is likely to stay closer to home.

Burke told At The Races: “The obvious next step is to to step her up in trip.

“I’m pretty sure we’ll go for the Yorkshire Oaks now, I’ll give her a two or three week break and miss the Irish Oaks.

“That seems to make sense as then we’ve got an autumn campaign. If we go to the Irish Oaks she won’t have chance to get a proper break.

“The Nassau (at Goodwood) has never been on the agenda. She’s had three Group Ones in six weeks, she’s travelled down by road to France twice and I think we’re all pretty keen to give her a break.

“If we don’t freshen her up now, we could pay for that in the autumn.

“To get that first Classic, it hasn’t really sunk in yet and it probably won’t until we sit down in a week and digest it.”
