Love Island star Chris Hughes steered Carnageo into fifth place on his first ride in public in the Best Western Hotels & Macmillan Ride of their Lives charity race at York.

The popular celebrity brought his mount, trained by Richard Fahey, to challenge in the final quarter-mile of the nine-furlong contest but Carnageo could not quicken enough to get into contention.

A dead-heat for first place was called after a thrilling finish.

The spoils were shared by Sarah Fanning, wife of top Flat jockey Joe Fanning, on the Mark Johnston-trained X Rated and Brian Ellison’s charge Apterix, ridden by Chris Brownless.

Hughes said: “I missed the break and straight away I knew it was going to be a tall order as the plan was to be on the front end.

“The ground was too quick for him, really. Ideally we could have done with the rain coming a few hours earlier.

“I worked my way back into it, but with about two furlongs to run I knew I wasn’t going to win.”

When asked if he ride in public again, Hughes said: “Without a doubt. It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable experience.”
