Elarqam is set to take his chance in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh next weekend.

The Mark Johnston-trained Frankel colt ran a fine race in defeat when fourth in the Newmarket version earlier this month, beaten less than three lengths by Saxon Warrior.

Johnston said: “He is almost certainly going to go to the Irish 2,000 Guineas. That is the thought at the moment, barring any change of plans.

“We had an open mind. Sheikh Hamdan spoke to me a few days after the Guineas and he was most concerned how the horse had come out of the race.

“The answer was he had come out well and I did think he would be sharper for it. He said ‘let’s aim for Ireland if it all goes well’ and that’s where we are going.”
